Monasteries of Meteora

Brave monks who wanted to be closer to god had built these impressive monasteries right on the plateaus, where they have been living for more then 600 years. The central halls of the churches show paintings drawn during the Late Byzantine period.

Still today, you can see the nets which where used by the monks to get up and down the rocks. Six of the initial 24 monasteries are still inhabited – they are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage.
